Crystal Lake Golf Club is a Bruce Matthews/Jerry Matthews designed 18-hole course situated in the scenic village of Beulah, 30 minutes west of Traverse City on US-31. The area boasts attractions like Sleeping Bear Dunes to many rivers and lakes. The front nine provides stunning views of Crystal Lake (one of the clearest and cleanest lakes in the world) as it winds through an old orchard that still allows samples to be plucked from the trees. Black Forest, the biggest surprise, and best value in Gaylord. Before architect Tom Doak gave us Pacific Dunes, Cape Kidnappers, and restored Pasatiempo, he designed this course in 1991. Doak, who lives in Traverse City, says this is where he started experimenting with some of the bunkering concepts he uses today. Golf Digest rates Black Forest as being just as much golf course as Arcadia Bluffs or Forest Dunes, and for $75, it’s about one-third of the price.
